Why are a bevy of blue pinwheels spinning in the spring breeze in front of Brevard City Hall?
Those playful toys adorn the entrance to the administrative building as a visual reminder that April is both the Month of the Young Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month in Transylvania County.
At Monday’s City Council meeting, Brevard Mayor Maureen Copelof read a proclamation publicly thanking local organizations Smart Start, The Family Place of Transylvania County, and The Children’s Center … all local non-profits which take care of and protect young children in the community.
“You can tell a lot about a society and a community by how they take care of the most vulnerable members of that community,” Copelof said. “And our children are some of our most vulnerable.”
Copelof then called upon all citizens, community agencies, faith groups, medical facilities, elected leaders, and businesses to increase their participation this month to support local early childhood programs and prevent child abuse for the rest of April as well as throughout the year.
