Representatives from Davidson River School and Brevard High School met with architects tasked with designing a new combined facility for students from both local public institutions at the current high school campus on Country Club Road.
The meetings at both public institutions were early steps in an ongoing project made possible by a $62 million needs-based construction grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction which will relocate students from the Davidson River alternative school to the Brevard High campus while constructing a new 70,000-square-foot career and technical education facility.
Teachers, administrators, and support staff are helping steer the strategic move to bring 56 students from an isolated 1945 building on Davidson River Road to a separate facility on the Brevard High School campus where both student bodies will maintain their separate school identities while gaining access to comprehensive programming that is otherwise currently unavailable.
It will also allow Brevard High School to replace outdated 1959 classrooms and the 1974 CTE wing with a more modern facility featuring 11 career pathways and industry-standard equipment.
These improvements are aimed at eliminating educational isolation and providing all 866 high school students with workforce preparation in hopes of creating a regional workforce development center serving 3,085+ students across Transylvania County.
During these early meetings with the architects, school staff shared insights, ideas, and feedback on the design and layout of the new Davidson River School. The BHS talks started with teachers whose physical classrooms will be impacted by the grant and architects plan to meet with more staff throughout the design process.
Construction of the combined facility is scheduled to start in June 2027 and is expected to take two years to complete. This work is separate from the recent school bond improvements that are an ongoing collaboration between Transylvania County government and the school district.
