The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office and the staff of Rosman Elementary School are mourning the loss of retired Sergeant Scott Thomas, a former school resource officer at Rosman Elementary and Rosman Middle schools, who passed away Saturday.

A statement on the Transylvania County Facebook page said Thomas had 18 dedicated years of service to the community and that contributions to this office and to the citizens of Transylvania County will not be forgotten.

“Beyond the badge, he will be remembered as a respected leader, a trusted colleague, and a friend to many,” read the announcement on the TCSO social media page. “His legacy lives on in the lives he impacted and the example he set for those who continue to serve. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Bobby Scott Thomas began working at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office in May 2006 as a school resource officer at Rosman Elementary and was promoted to work at Rosman Middle in 2018. Among Thomas’ accolades, he was honored by the school system in 2008 for his work at RES to get it designated as a “super safe school” at the 2008 NC Safe Schools and Character Education Conference.

“Officer Scott Thomas served and protected all of the RES family for many years,” added a post on the Rosman Elementary School Facebook page. “We join with all of the Rosman and Transylvania community in mourning his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Thomas retired from the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office in December 2024. No cause of death or funeral arrangements have been released at this time.
