Western North Carolina businesswoman and member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Anna Ferguson has been selected by the Republican parties of Jackson, Swain and Transylvania counties to replace the late Mike Clampitt in North Carolina House of Representatives.
Clampitt passed away in March following a prolonged battle with cancer, but was preparing to seek another term for N.C. House seat 119 at the time of his death.
Under state law, the governor must appoint someone to complete the remainder of Clampitt’s term based on a recommendation from local Republican Party leaders in the district.
On Saturday, Ferguson secured that recommendation. She was was born and raised in the Qualla Community of Jackson County and is the third generation to live on her family farm.
She attended North Carolina State University and has more than 30 years of experience working in construction finance. Her involvement in public affairs includes service on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ planning board.
Although Ferguson will fill Clampitt’s seat, she’s not required to run in November. Transylvania County Democrat Mark Burrows is the Democratic candidate on the November 3 ballot for NC House District 119.
