The Pisgah Conservancy’s trails staff and volunteers participate in a previous National Trails Day. Pisgah Conservancy
The Pisgah Conservancy invites the community to roll up their sleeves and celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6, with a volunteer workday in the Pisgah Ranger District.
Volunteers will join The Pisgah Conservancy’s professional trails staff for a hands-on day of trail improvement work lopping vegetation, hauling brush, and repairing trail tread on Big Creek Trail, which traverses nearly five miles from North Mills River Recreation Area to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
“This beautiful and remote trail has become overgrown and unmaintained over many years. Our goal is to cut back the vegetation in the first mile of trail and make sure the narrowest sections are appropriately wide for horse, bike, and hike use,” said Pisgah Conservancy Trails and Recreation Technician Simon Farr in a news release. “Come join us on National Trails Day in giving this trail a little life!”
National Trails Day reflects the year-round commitment required to care for one of the nation’s most beloved national forests. Every mile of maintained trail helps ensure safe and sustainable access for hikers, bikers, equestrians, anglers, climbers, and other forest visitors enjoying the Pisgah Ranger District’s 400-mile trail system.
Through its partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, The Pisgah Conservancy supports trail and recreation planning, trail maintenance, bridge construction and repair, new trail development, and improvements to recreation infrastructure throughout the Pisgah Ranger District. The organization’s professional trail crews, the first of their kind dedicated specifically to the district, work alongside partners and volunteers to help address long-standing maintenance needs.
Pre-registration is required for the National Trails Day volunteer opportunity. The workday is rated a 6 out of 10 in difficulty, and volunteers must be at least 12 years old to participate. Registered volunteers will receive full event details by email.
