Brevard High School Future Farmers of America came home from the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh with several class wins, three championship drive qualifications and a Junior Showmanship Championship Drive finalist.

Students traveled to Raleigh with two trailer loads of goats and cattle. Along with competing, the group took a private tour of NC State University’s Agriculture Institute.

Ruby Book was a finalist in the Junior Showmanship Championship Drive in both the goat and cattle divisions. In the cattle ring, she won first place in the Got To Be NC 1000lb+ Feeder Steer Class, which qualified her for the championship drive.

Gwennie Oszterling also won her Got To Be NC feeder steer class, taking first in the 900- 1000 lb division and qualifying for the championship drive.

Marlee Owenby won first place in the Premium Heifer Jan.-Feb. 2026 class and first place in the Got To Be NC Jan.-Feb. 2026 class. Her two wins qualified her twice for the Commercial Heifer Championship Drive.

Two other students placed second in their feeder steer classes. Haiden Cagle placed second in the Got To Be NC 800- 900 lb class, and Gracie Shields placed second in the Got To Be NC 700- 800 lb class.

In the goat ring, Book placed fifth with her doe, Skittles, third with her doe, Roxie, and sixth with her goat, Boogie. Other goat results:

  • Rebecca Harris placed sixth in her class with her doe, Marilyn.
  • Seth Rebbeor placed eighth in his class with his goat, Coconut.
  • Oszterling placed eighth in her class with her doe, SuzieQ.
  • Kayson Toole placed fifth in her class with her doe, Amy.

Showing livestock takes months of daily work, including feeding, grooming, training, and caring for animals long before they enter the ring. The fairs gave members a chance to put that work on display, according to BHS Animal Science teacher and FFA advisor Sarah Clayton.
