At the most recent Brevard City Council meeting, Mayor Maureen Copelof presented local Daughters of the American Revolution members with a proclamation declaring Sept. 17-23 “Constitution Week” in the city of Brevard.

“One of the things that is so important today is to teach people about the Constitution,” Copelof said at the Sept. 8 portion of the public meeting set aside for certificates, awards, and recognitions. “The DAR steps up and does that in so many forums throughout the world.”

September 17, 2026, marks the 239th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention and the mayor said it was appropriate to present the city’s official proclamation on that anniversary to representatives from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution to commemorate the occasion.

“I, Maureen Copelof by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Brevard, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 through 23 as “Constitution Week” in the City of Brevard, and ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained,” Copelof read from the official proclamation before adding that she hopes the DAR and other local patriotic organizations will also commemorate the occasion.

“The Waightstill Avery chapter of the DAR continues to work with school children and adults, people who have not learned yet or have forgotten what the Constitution says and means,” said local DAR regent Sharon Powell when she was presented with a copy of the mayor’s proclamation. “We just try to instill that and bring that back to life.”

“We give all of our high school seniors pocket Constitutions so they will have that when they go out into the world,” explained Nina Brown, 1st vice regent of the local DAR chapter. “Most years, we also hand them out to eighth graders so that they have one when they are learning about this great country of ours and we have a video about it that they all see in the schools.”

“I have my pocket Constitution in the center of my desk in my office,” Mayor Copelof added. “Thank you for all the work that you do.”
