The Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center is hosting its sixth annual poetry contest. This year’s theme is Freedom and what it means to you.

Original submissions may be of any length or style. The author must live in Transylvania County, agree to be photographed if their work is chosen for recognition, and allow for their poem to be posted on social media. Authors may only submit one poem for consideration and there are no formal rules for the work’s structure.

Poems will be judged anonymously in four age groups: elementary school and younger, middle school, high school, and adults. Winners in each age category will receive $100. Honorable mentions will receive $50 cash.

Entries will be accepted throughout April, but must include the author’s name, age, current education level, phone number, and mailing address.

Poems may be submitted via email to poetry@marycjenkins.org, dropped off in person or mailed to the Mary C Jenkins Community Center at 221 Mills Avenue in Brevard.

The poetry contest is sponsored by the community center board, the city of Brevard and Brevard Rotary. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony at the community center on Saturday, May 10 at 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
