The Brevard Police Department, in conjunction with the Brevard Livability Task Force, is offering a free community self-defense and situational awareness class on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center.
This course begins with classroom instruction in situational awareness, risk reduction, crime prevention strategies, and defensive concepts, followed by hands-on training in physical defense techniques. Activities will help participants identify safety risks, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and explore their options for handling threats of violence. During the class, students will have the opportunity to test their self-defense skills in a simulated and controlled environment.
The class is offered free of charge and students are selected through an application process with specific requirements. Applicants must be at least 55 years of age and live or work in the City of Brevard.
Enrollment is limited to approximately 30 students and all students must complete an application and sign a waiver of liability.
Applicants are placed in the class until the maximum number is reached, then those remaining will be put on a waiting list for a possible future class. Lunch during the Oct. 3 class at the Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center, 221 Mills Ave., will be provided to registered applicants by Through the Trees non-profit organization.
